Royal Military Tattoo 2017

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo will be taking place this year from the 4th – 26th August, and as ever draws a massive diverse audience from all corners of the world!

Royal Military Tattoo

If you’re not exactly sure what the Tattoo actually is, its origins began from around 1600, when drummers used to be sent into towns to inform soldiers that it was time to return to their barracks for the night. Over hundreds of years, this has changed from a lone drummer into military music, which eventually evolved in to an elaborate show involving theatrics and musical performances!

Royal Military Tattoo

What makes the Edinburgh tattoo so special, is that it involves different military groups from around the world, all while celebrating all things Scottish. Performers from across 48 countries have taken part in the show, and around 30 percent of the audiences are from overseas.

Royal Military Tattoo

Millions of people have seen the show since its beginnings in 1952 from the famous Edinburgh Castle esplanade, and the Tattoo has an annual television audience of 100 million people, broadcast to over 40 countries.

Royal Military Tattoo

Ghillie Dhu has everything to create a truly ultimate Scottish experience! Before your visit to see the Tattoo, why not dine in the cosy surroundings of our main bar? You receive a wee dram of whisky on arrival to get you in to the Scottish spirit, and we have a sumptuous set menu available for you to dine from. With 2 courses at £19.95 and 3 courses at £22.95, we have a number of options available for everyone.

The Scotsman Hotel

Welcome to The Scotsman Hotel

Ghillie Dhu is proud to welcome The Scotsman Hotel to G1 Group’s Central Edinburgh Hotels collection.  This iconic and historic property is located a 10 minute stroll from Ghillie Dhu and certainly has a wealth of character in abundance.

Scotsman Hotel

In the 1900s the North Bridge running between the New and Old Towns of Edinburgh was widened, and as part of this expansion a 190 foot high tower was built, into which the Scotsman Newspaper moved their offices.

The direct access from Market Street to the building was an ideal distribution outlet for the papers to be packed directly onto the trains at Waverley Station straight from the printing house that took up the entire basement.

Across the middle floors of the building which is now home to some of the Scotsman’s boutique rooms and suites were originally used for the editorial offices. The Penthouse Suite – split over two floors – complete with its own Sauna used to be the Pigeon lofts where the news was circulated across Scotland.  Just check out the breath-taking views from The Penthouse balcony above.

In 2001 the Scotsman Newspaper moved to their own purpose built offices in Holyrood and the iconic building on North Street was renovated into The Scotsman Hotel.

Looking around the hotel, many of the original features remain, ensuring the building remains one of the iconic landmarks within the capital city.

Wood panelled rooms and original turrets maintain their romance. The Marble staircase, now the center of the hotel, retains its imposing stained glass window and glows magnificently by candle light each evening.

Now with 56 rooms and 13 suites, The Scotsman Hotel  retained its originality and quirky features and this, along with a boutique service they endeavour to deliver, offers visitors a unique experience.

Wedding Fair

We have a stunning venue, with beautiful high vaulted arched ceilings, candlelit chandeliers and drapes to create a magically romantic atmosphere. We have the perfect location, right in the centre of town, a wonderful team of chefs to provide you with a meal tailored to suit you, but best and most important of all, we have an incredibly talented Wedding Coordinator, Kirsty Bernard, who will be able to take you step by step from your original enquiry, all the way through to the big day itself. She’s on hand to answer all your niggling questions in order to put you at ease and settle your nerves, to make sure your day is as perfect as it can be. So, to introduce Kirsty, and in order for you to get to know her a little better, we asked her a few questions, some to help get to know who she is, and some that will give you the confidence to trust her with your special day! So here we go:

What is your favourite colour?
Purple and not just because I work at Ghillie haha

What is your favourite time of the year?
Autumn

What is your favourite tv show?
Bones

How long have you been a wedding coordinator?
4 Years

What’s the best thing about being a wedding coordinator?
Meeting so many new people all the time. I love getting to know my couples and sharing their most special day with them and seeing the pure joy on their face. It’s also great making friends in the industry through suppliers.

What’s the most memorable wedding you’re been a part of organising?
So difficult!! Each one holds a special memory as they’re all different and have different aspects which make them great. On a sentimental level helping to plan my best friend’s wedding as Bridesmaid was the greatest honour. For comedy value I had an Albanian wedding where they set fire to a napkin in the middle of the dancefloor and it went up like a light resulting in the father of the groom running into the street screaming.

Why should people choose you as a wedding co-ordinator or Ghillie Dhu as a wedding venue?
Ghillie is a fantastic venue, great location and just beautiful. I always strive to make a personal connection with my couples and help them with all aspects of the day even if it doesn’t necessarily fall under my job description. I was nominated for wedding coordinator of the year at the VOWS awards in 2014 after 18 months of doing the job.

Do you have any funny stories you can tell us?
I accidently became a wedding coordinator. I was a restaurant manager who was insanely organised and the owner of the company I worked for offered me a promotion to another site which was becoming popular with weddings which I organised alongside my management roll. Until I came to Ghillie a year ago I didn’t have an official coordinator job title and essentially taught myself through experience of what worked and what didn’t.

And one last little question to show just how amazingly wonderful she is!

Do you have any weird talents?
I’m double jointed in my big toes…

We hope you know Kirsty a little more, and love her as much as we do! Don’t forget if you want to meet Kirsty personally to discuss your confirmed wedding or the possibility of having your wedding at the Ghillie Dhu, you can meet her at our Wedding Fair, held 19th March 11am – 4pm, or at the Corn Exchange Wedding Fair 4th-5th March.
