Royal Military Tattoo

If you’re not exactly sure what the Tattoo actually is, its origins began from around 1600, when drummers used to be sent into towns to inform soldiers that it was time to return to their barracks for the night. Over hundreds of years, this has changed from a lone drummer into military music, which eventually evolved in to an elaborate show involving theatrics and musical performances!

What makes the Edinburgh tattoo so special, is that it involves different military groups from around the world, all while celebrating all things Scottish. Performers from across 48 countries have taken part in the show, and around 30 percent of the audiences are from overseas.

Millions of people have seen the show since its beginnings in 1952 from the famous Edinburgh Castle esplanade, and the Tattoo has an annual television audience of 100 million people, broadcast to over 40 countries.
